How Do You Find Out?
By Debra Thompson

Recently, the CEO of Radio Shack was forced to resign because it was discovered that he had lied on his resume about his academic qualifications. In an ideal world, employers could rely on all statements made by applicants in their resumes, employment applications and interviews. In the real world, employers proceed at their peril if they fail to confirm what applicants tell them.

Numerous studies report that 25% to 40% of applicants provide false, exaggerated, or misleading information about their qualifications or backgrounds. One out of 20 applicants falsifies a name, social security number or driver’s license number. One survey by Reid Psychological Systems even found that 95% of college students polled would lie to get a job, and that 41% of those students had already done so.

Checking references is one of the most valuable tools you have to improve your ability to hire the right person the first time. DO NOT eliminate this step just because the candidate “appears” good. If done well, the reference-checking process helps hiring managers screen in qualified candidates who are good fits for the job and the organization, and screen out incompetent or otherwise unsuitable individuals.

The full article on this subject will appear in the May/June 2006 issue of REPRO REPORT.
