IRgA Announces New Programs
|
Steve Bova, CAE
Executive Director
February is a busy month at the IRgA as two new and exciting initiatives will be placed into action: an Operating Ratio Study and a Survey on Digital Services Practices. Your participation is important to the success of both studies.
Operating Ratio Study. Watch your mail for the IRgA's Operating Ratio Study of 2005 business data serving as a benchmarking tool for the entire reprographics industry. Most readers will receive their survey form in the mail within 3-5 business days.

 |
We need your help! Your participation is critical to the success of this project. As a reward for your participation, a copy of the bound report will be available for FREE to all companies that complete and return their survey form by the March 17 deadline. If you are unable to complete the form, please forward it to your CFO or accountant. All data will be held strictly confidential by our independent consultant and will be reported in aggregate form. Individual surveys will be destroyed after tabulation.
The completed study, scheduled for May distribution, will represent a compilation of financial data pertaining to various sales, expenses and profits. You will be able to analyze various factors such as cost of goods, labor, and overhead expenses, as well as growth rates and profitability, and compare the ratios against various sales volumes. For questions about the survey, please contact John Stewart of Q.P. Consulting, Inc. at 321/727-2442.
Best Practices in Digital Services. The IRgA has formed a committee for the purposes of defining digital services, setting minimum guidelines and defining best practices in this area. A web survey will be sent to you this week asking for your current practices with regard to digital services. After compiling the data, the IRgA will share the results through the News Digest, with information posted to the website at www.irga.com. Additionally, committee members will present the results and lead a dialogue on the subject during an educational session at the Convention and Trade Show this May (details provided below). The final document will be in the form of a best practices statement from the IRgA that can be used by all industry members to communicate with their employees and customers.

Convention News
IRgA 2006 – A True Industry-wide Event
There is a lot of buzz about the IRgA's 80th Annual Convention and Trade Show, to be held May 10–12 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. And for good reason...
Industry Groups Set to Meet. Several reprographics industry groups have informed the IRgA of their intention to hold their business meetings in conjunction with the IRgA, including ARC/PEiR, ReproMAX and RSA. ARC and PEiR are holding meetings prior to the event and ReproMAX and RSA are holding their meetings Friday afternoon and Saturday following the IRgA.
Friday Reception Open to Entire Industry. In an effort to accommodate the needs of all groups, the IRgA's Friday evening closing reception will be open to all industry members. While we would like everyone to attend the full convention and trade show, we realize that this is not possible for everyone. At the same time, The IRgA Convention Committee and Board of Directors would like every reprographer, vendor and affinity group to experience the IRgA's event. Therefore, in an effort to unite the entire reprographics industry, the IRgA will sponsor a cocktail reception open to all on Friday, May 12, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Gaylord Palms.
Trade Show Nears Sell-Out. Response to the IRgA's call for exhibitors has been tremendous, as more than 90% of the available space for the 2006 trade show has been committed. Any vendor company that wishes to exhibit their products and services at the 2006 trade show is encouraged to act now by contacting Nicole Boland at (312) 673-5828.
Education A Primary Focus. The Program Committee has assembled an excellent educational line-up for 2006 with even more time slots. You don't want to miss the opening keynote session, "12 Trends Impacting the AEC industry – Opportunities for the reprographics industry" by David Watkins, of WHR Architects, or the Friday Luncheon session by syndicated sales guru Jeffrey Gitomer. Click here for more information.
This year, there will be concurrent breakout sessions on Wednesday, May 10 following the Golf Tournament. Breakout sessions will also take place Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Some of the topics include:
- Best Practices in Charging for Digital Services
- Future Trends in the Reprographics Industry
- Advanced Planning Techniques for Business Owners
- Lessons Learned from Working with Color
- Managing and Sharing Complex Designs with DWF by Autodesk
- Printing Benefits and Customer Education of PDF by Adobe
- Benchmarking Your Firm's Operations
- And Others
Registration is Open! It's easy to register for the IRgA Convention and Trade Show. Simply click here to register online, register by fax or simply call IRgA Headquarters at 800/833-4742 for additional information. The important part is to register NOW to qualify for reduced rates and to secure your room at the popular Gaylord Palms at the reduced rate of $179/night.

Pump It Up
When fuel costs go up, is it a wise business decision to increase costs for pickup and delivery?
By Scott Cullen
Industries that pride themselves on fast response times, particularly when it comes to delivering and picking up goods or services, had some tough decisions to make when gas prices jumped well past the $3 mark last year. Although gas prices have slowly crept downward during the waning months of 2005 and into the early months of 2006, paying $3+ for a gallon of gas certainly served as a wake-up call to many industries, including the reprographics industry.
So when energy prices go up along with the inevitable labor and insurance costs associated with pick up and deliveries, what can business owners do to keep their costs in check? Do they engage in some old-fashioned belt tightening across the organization? Do they pass those costs along to customers in the way of surcharges? Do they increase the price of the products they sell? Or do they simply eat those costs, degrading margins?
Although some business owners were hesitant to go on the record or even talk to REPRO REPORT about how they've addressed this issue, others were just as upfront with us as they were with their customers.
The full article on this subject will appear in the March/April 2006 issue of REPRO REPORT.
