Education Focus to Continue After Convention

Steve Bova, CAE
Executive Director

When Fred Smith, founder and CEO of FedEx, was named CEO of the Year in 2004 by Chief Executive magazine, he was asked how he has managed to stay at the helm during a time when many of his peers have not. He replied, "I think the most important thing that it takes is continual learning and education and the discipline to apply the lessons that are out there to your operation."

The key word being continual learning and education. There is a lot of learning that occurs on the job. True education (the most valuable lessons) often takes place outside of the shop – talking to customers, reading books, magazines, and searching the web, or observing how others operate their business.

The IRgA offers both formal (classroom) and informal (networking) learning opportunities at its Annual Convention and Trade Show. The 2006 event, being held next week in Florida, addresses the hottest issues and trends in the reprographics industry. It’s the one time each year the entire industry gathers in one location to discuss our business.

What’s missing from the Convention is the continual part. To address this reality, the IRgA, through its Education Committee, is committed to expanding upon the educational experiences of the Annual Convention and delivering them continually throughout the year. As committee chair, John Cronin, President of PLP Digital Systems, has worked with the board and the IRgA staff to create an educational vision for your association.

Before the vision is finalized, it is necessary to gain your feedback so that we can prioritize the content that is most important to you. An one-page survey will be handed out during the breakout sessions at the Annual Convention. The survey simply asks attendees to prioritize their educational needs and desires. Following the Convention, we will use the information that is provided to create a simple-to-complete "educational needs assessment" that will be distributed to the News Digest email list.

From the information collected, the IRgA will develop a few great programs to address the most pressing educational needs as identified by the industry and will identify the best approaches to delivering the educational content. We look forward to receiving your feedback, as well as your continued participation in the IRgA!

PPMA White Paper Clarifies Trends in Finishing
The Post Print Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has announced a new white paper report dealing with the current trends in finishing technology. Specifically, the seven page commentary deals with patterns of growth and evolution in demand for mounting and laminating processes in various graphics businesses. Based in part on data from three key industry studies, the paper discusses the impact of newer printing processes such as flatbed inkjet printers and eco-solvent system rollfed printers. While there is no question that finishing is changing in some ways, the PPMA report concludes that this particular industry niche is more dynamic than ever. The PPMA white paper is available at no charge to reprographics shops and may be downloaded in PDF format at: www.printfinish.org/paper.html

Working Out Your Business Plan
By Brett Scully

When I first started at our firm, I was like a drunken sailor when it came to buying new gear. My dad's idea of "capital spending" was buying used Dietzgen blueline machines for 500 bucks, so he was not real psyched when I started getting quotes for $40,000 electronic gizmos.

At one point, my dad put his foot down and stated that he would no longer approve my equipment wish list until I gave him a detailed budget going out at least one year.

On a larger scale, when I later approached the ol' man about buying companies, he was as concerned about the risks involved in such ventures as he was when I first started investing in plotters. This time, he made me produce a five-year business plan instead of a budget.

If we think about traveling in our car to somewhere not traveled before, the thought of that trip without a map or directions is analogous to us trying to go towards the future in our business without a plan. Without a map, the trip may end up OK, but most likely we are going to get lost. Same thing with the biz. Without a plan, EXPECT to get lost.

The full article on this subject will appear in the May/June 2006 issue of REPRO REPORT.
