Roger Staubach to Keynote IRgA
2007 Convention

Steve Bova, CAE
Executive Director

Hall of Fame quarterback and esteemed businessman, Roger Staubach, has agreed to serve as the keynote speaker for the IRgA's 2007 Convention and Trade Show, taking place May 10-12, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.

The Dallas Cowboys legend and entrepreneur extraordinaire will present, "Leadership and Teamwork on the Field and in the Office," as part of the Friday Luncheon presentation.

Staubach is chairman and chief executive officer of The Staubach Company, a leading global real estate advisory firm specializing in office, industrial and retail space.

Staubach's business career is equally, if not more, impressive as his professional football career, as he heads a company of 1,300 people located in 60 offices throughout the Americas and serves more than 2,400 clients. The 1963 Heisman Trophy recipient is a 1965 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. After serving in the Navy for four years, he joined the Dallas Cowboys and launched his real estate career while playing football. During his football career, Staubach, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, was the NFL Most Valuable Player, Vince Lombardi Sportsman of the Year, and led the league in passing four times. He is known for his unparalleled standard of business and personal ethics. Click here for Staubach's full biography.

Keeping with the Cowboys theme, the Annual IRgA Golf Outing will be played at the pristine Dallas Cowboys Golf Course, which is not even five minutes from the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, where the IRgA Convention will take place. Bill Thomas is serving as Golf Chair.

Industry vendors should look to their mailboxes for the 2007 Exhibitor Prospectus and Media Kit. Prime space is still available and is selling fast. The 2006 show was sold out and had six companies on the waiting list. Demand for the 2007 Convention and Trade Show is very high.

The 2007 Convention Chair is Bryan Thomas of Thomas Reprographics, and the Program Chair is Gary Wilbur of R.S. Knapp/Napco. Please refer to future issues of News Digest for the latest Convention and Trade Show information.

The IRgA welcomes your feedback through info@irga.com, or you may contact me directly at sbova@irga.com.

Inside the IRgA

IRgA to Establish a Series of Webinars
The IRgA Education Committee has met and agreed to deliver four webinars in the next year. The next webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, 11:00-12:30 Central Time. The committee has identified a topic consistent with our technology theme and is contacting a potential speaker. The IRgA will provide more information regarding the November webinar as soon as it becomes available. In addition to November 8, the IRgA will be announcing webinars, tentatively scheduled for the first Wednesday of the following months: February, June, September and December.

The guiding principle of the IRgA's education program is to deliver value by doing a few things great. Our aim is to align offerings so there is continuity between the webinars and the convention program. The first two webinars focus on technology; the second series will center on topics related to operational efficiency--the number one topic identified in the IRgA's recent Educational Needs Assessment Survey. Click here for survey results.

Trends Impacting the A/E/C Industry
12 opportunities for the reprographics industry

By David Watkins

My firm requires 3.2 million copies and 2.7 million square feet of large-format printing every year. If you convert those volumes to total square footage, you find that my firm's paper volume is well over 5 million square feet per year.

The volume of buildings we design every year averages around 2.6 million square feet. That is, for every square foot of building we are producing, we are producing twice as much area of paper.

You're probably thinking, "Are we in a great business, or what?" But I couldn't stop thinking about the information that represents. So, I found myself asking, "Am I in the design business, or am I in the information management business?"

Ask yourself: What business are you really in?

Our reprographics firm provides the following services for us in its on-site print shop: printing and duplication; binding; deliveries; equipment leasing and maintenance; photo processing and mounting; supplies; file storage, retrieval and distribution; signage; and staffing.

But what is apparent from that list is that our reprographer is not really in the reprographics business (or at least not just in the reprographics business). He's really in the I-Want-to-Help-You-Improve-Your-Business business.

It seems to me that you are more in the digital services business today, but what is important is to put some thought into the current transition of your industry. Where are you going? What opportunities exist out there that you can tap into? What is the appropriate position for you in the A/E/C industry?

This article excerpt from David Watkins' presentation at the 80th Annual IRgA Convention and Trade Show will appear in the September/October issue of REPRO REPORT. The complete presentation is available on CD-ROM. Click here to order.
