IRgA to Form Technology Committee

Trevor Hansen, Director of Technology with Perkinson Reprographics in Phoenix, AZ, has recommended that the IRgA form a Technology Committee. With the Board's blessing, Hansen is beginning to develop the committee, and Kip Young has agreed to serve as the Board liaison. The committee seeks at least two interested volunteers.

The purpose of the Technology Committee is to provide IRgA members with information related to technology issues faced by many reprographics firms. The committee will be tasked with preparing white papers, best practices and other presentations on topics including, but not limited to:

  • Business Continuity
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Data Storage
  • Network administration and best practices
  • Software licensing best practices
  • The use of technology to support changing business needs
Steve Bova, CAE
Executive Director
The committee might also look to expand the IRgA's relationships with technology vendors to benefit member companies, and also to expand technology provider representation at the annual trade show. For now, the IRgA has decided to limit this committee to members from reprographics companies only. The following individuals have agreed to serve on the committee:
  • Trevor Hansen, Perkinson Reprographics, Inc., Phoenix, AZ
  • Kumar Wiratunga, American Reprographics Company, Walnut Creek, CA
  • Chase Brock, Imaging Technologies, Atlanta, GA
  • Brent Kik, Kal-Blue Reprographics, Kalamazoo, MI

The reprographics community is struggling with the changes happening to their businesses related to technology. The companies that survive will be those that understand how to implement the right technology to support their business direction and the market changes. The addition of the technology committee expands the value offerings of the IRgA and addresses the most critical concerns of our member companies.

The IRgA welcomes your feedback through info@irga.com, or you may contact me directly at sbova@irga.com.

Convention News

"Early Bird" Registration Expires, But Plenty of Worms Left!
It is said the "Early Bird" gets the worm-and there were plenty of early birds who registered for the IRgA Convention and Trade Show by the early bird deadline. In fact, registration for the May 9-11 industry-wide event in Dallas, Texas is ahead of pace from the record-setting show in Las Vegas two years ago; and the golf tournament is now SOLD OUT, with a waiting list in development.

You can register anytime-even on site if you wish, but there are incentives to planning ahead. If you plan to attend the IRgA, you can still save $100 over the on-site rate. And if you can't make it for the entire event, consider popping in for the day. Add the value of attending education sessions, visiting the trade show floor and networking with your peers at any of the scheduled breaks and social events, and the ROI in time and dollars is bound to be on the black side versus red.

Click here for more information and to register for the show NOW! Don't delay, there's less than four weeks left to go!

Last Call for Trade Show Exhibitors
If you're an exhibitor, there is a limited time left to sign up for this year's trade show and to gain access to a digital printing industry cross-section that no other event provides. Don't delay, over 85% of the trade show space this year has already been sold! Exhibitor information, including some sponsorship opportunities, is still available on the IRgA website. Click here for more information on exhibit space and sponsorship. To view the PDF of the 2007 Exhibitor Prospectus, click here.

2007 Convention's New Wednesday Motivational Session
This year's Convention will feature a new Wednesday afternoon motivational session. If you are registered for the full convention, but will not be playing golf, still plan on arriving early on Wednesday to attend "The Best Way to Predict Your Company's Future Is to Invent It!" with Fred and Dan Akers of the Akers Performance Group. The session will be held from 2:30-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9th.

Friday Evening Closing Reception- A Fitting Conclusion...
With people from all industry groups gathered in one location, the IRgA has decided to continue its All-Industry Closing Reception Friday evening, May 11. Any industry member, so long as they have a badge for the IRgA or one of the affiliated meetings being held at the Gaylord Texan, is welcome to attend. If you can't make the IRgA on Thursday or Friday, we'd like to give you a taste of the IRgA so you'll join us the following year. The reception will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m., Friday, May 11. The event is designed to serve as a gathering place for those who will be going out for dinner and experiencing the Dallas nightlife later.

Committee Volunteers Needed for 2007-08
The IRgA is looking for a few good men and women to serve the association in its expanded committee structure. Several members have come forth recently to serve the association, and we have put them to work. The IRgA has expanded the Education and Digital Services committees to include more member volunteers. As we prepare for our 2007-08 committee year, which begins August 1, we're looking to expand our committee structure to include more member volunteers on other committees. Click here for a list and description of standing committees. If you are interested in serving on an IRgA committee in 2007-08 and have not indicated your interest, please send an e-mail to Steve Bova at sbova@irga.com.

IRgA Staff Holds Strategic Retreat at Cushing
The IRgA would like to thank member company Cushing for hosting the IRgA's staff strategic and team building retreat in mid-February. Twelve IRgA staffers took facility tours guided by Cathie and Mike Duff, followed by a state of the industry report from our member experts. The IRgA staff discussed ways to strengthen the special bond on our team, participated in a brainstorming session to further the association's strategic initiatives, and discussed metrics for measuring our success. Internal task forces have been formed. Their recommendations will be presented to the IRgA Board for consideration later this year.

IRgA 2007 Media Kit Available Online
The IRgA also has several advertising opportunities in various association publications, including REPRO REPORT, the IRgA News Digest, and the IRgA Membership Directory. The 2007 Media Kit features advertising opportunities, detailed editorial information, and submission material specifications. There is still time to secure your 2007 positions today! 3D Printing
Is it really here?

By Ed Avis

Remember the movie "The Fly," where the guy invents a machine that evaporates his body in one chamber and then reconstructs it in another chamber on the other side of the room? Well, forget the first chamber, where the guy evaporates, but picture the second chamber, where a solid, 3D object suddenly appears out of thin air. Now you're picturing a 3D printer.

3D printers take digital information and turn it into plastic models. It sounds amazing, but it's been available for several years, and some reprographics firms are already using it to make architectural models for clients.

The possibilities seem endless-you could create models of buildings for architects to use in presentations; models for designers to use to check for design flaws; models for engineers who want to hold prototypes of new products; the list goes on and on. Before we snap back to reality and see how reprographics firms are really using the equipment, let's see how it works.
