Océ ColorWave 900
All of the wide-format Memjet devices use the same basic technology, a five-head array of Memjet printheads. There are slight differences among the Xerox IJP 2000, RTI Vortex 4200, and Océ ColorWave 900 in other areas.
Speed
The Memjet printhead technology outputs 6 inches per second in the 1600 x 1600 dpi mode and 12 inches per second in the 1600 x 800 mode.
The Xerox IJP 2000, however, is permanently set at the 6 ips mode. The RTI and Océ machines can be set by the user to either speed.
RIP
The Xerox and RTI versions use the Caldera raster image processor (RIP). The Océ version uses the Power M Controller, and the Onyx Thrive RIP is optional.
Paper Handling
The Océ ColorWave 900 has a six-roll paper capacity. The printer automatically switches rolls if different media is required, or if a roll runs out. The printer does not sense if a roll will run out mid-print, but it will restart a print on a fresh roll if it gets cut off before it is done.
The Xerox IJP 2000 has a four-roll paper capacity. It automatically switches rolls between media as needed. Unlike the ColorWave, the IJP 2000 will sense when a roll is about to run out and will automatically switch to another to prevent a print from being cut off.
The RTI Vortex has a two-roll paper capacity. As with the IJP 2000, it senses when a roll is near empty and switches if necessary.
Ink Capacity
The Memjet printers come with five ink tanks – cyan, magenta, yellow, and two black. All three versions offer 2-liter tanks; the RTI version offers optional 10-liter tanks.
Cost
The MSRP of the RTI Vortex is $110,000; the RIP and optional stacker cost an additional $4,000 each. The Xerox IJP 2000 lists at $143,000, and that includes the stacker and the RIP. The Océ ColorWave 900 lists for $160,000, and that includes the stacker and the RIP.
